“What do you have against Kaitlyn anyway?” asked my usually mellow Charlie later that evening. He so rarely made comments of an interpersonal nature that I knew I needed to take him seriously.

“What makes you think I have something against her?”

“Are you kidding? It’s obvious. You treat her different from the other kids. Like you have it out for her. Her parents already go hard on her. She’s under so much pressure to get into an Ivy League school. They act like the sky will fall if she doesn’t get into Yale. Can’t you be a little nicer to her?”

It had never occurred to me that I was treating her differently. I thought that the difference was radiating from her, but I realized that it was true. I hated her. I had from the moment I set eyes on her. And to me, the fact that I hated her had always seemed right and true and fair.

I could deny it to myself, but I didn’t have to scrape hard beneath the surface to figure out why. She was Lissa reincarnated: my oldest friend, my benefactress, the person I hated most in all the world.
